Kids · Gi · No-gi

Three classes. Zero attitude.

Whether you want to compete, get fit or just try something new, there is a class that fits.

Kids

Weekdays 16:30 · Saturday 10:00

Confidence, coordination and a lot of fun. Kids learn to move well, fall safely and stay calm under pressure, with games that sneak the technique in.

Fundamentals

Weekdays 19:00 · Saturday 12:00

Start here. The core positions, escapes and submissions, taught step by step. Perfect if you have never set foot on a mat, and still useful once you have.

All levels

Weekdays 18:00 · Saturday 11:00

Technique, drilling and sparring for everyone. Partners are matched by size and experience, so new starters and seasoned grapplers train side by side.

Gi or no-gi?

Both are Brazilian jiu-jitsu: the art of controlling someone on the ground and making them tap without striking. The difference is what you wear. Most of our members do both.

Gi

The kimono game

  • Train in a jacket and trousers called a gi
  • Grips on the collar and sleeves slow things down
  • Great for learning patience, control and detail

No-gi

Shorts and a rash guard

  • Train in shorts and a fitted top
  • Faster and more scrambly, with fewer grips
  • Closest to wrestling and MMA grappling

When we train

Monday to Saturday. Sundays are for rest, recovery and watching competition footage in bed.

Nervous? Good. Everyone was.

Every black belt was once a beginner who turned up anyway. Here is exactly what happens when you walk in.

  1. 01

    Pick a class

Adults start with Fundamentals or All levels. Little ones go to Kids. Check the timetable and choose a time that suits.

  2. 02

    Arrive ten minutes early

Say hello, sign a quick waiver and meet your coach. We will show you where to change and where everything is.

  3. 03

    Wear something comfy

Sports kit with no zips or pockets is perfect for no-gi. Take off jewellery, trim your nails and bring water and flip-flops.

  4. 04

    Tap early, have fun

Tapping means stop, and everyone respects it. Nobody expects you to know anything yet. Just turn up and give it a go.

Questions?

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. Grappling is how you get fit, not the entry fee. Go at your own pace and rest when you need to.

I have never done any martial arts. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Most people who walk in have never trained. Fundamentals classes are built for exactly that.

Is it safe?

Jiu-jitsu has no punches or kicks. You learn to control and submit, and you tap to stop at any time. Partners look after each other.

Am I too old, too big or too small?

Jiu-jitsu was built so smaller people could handle bigger ones. People start in their teens, forties and beyond.

What is the difference between gi and no-gi?

Gi classes are trained in a jacket and trousers with grips on the cloth. No-gi is shorts and a rash guard and plays a bit faster. Both are welcome on day one.
